Anuradha Thakur Profile

Anuratha ThakurAnuradha's tryst with tribal people started in her childhood in the Thaker tribal district of Maharashtra. During her diploma she studied the paintings of tribal women done by Amrita Sher Gil and was very much fascinated by them. She also became very interested in the flowing lines of the figures in the Ajanta paintings, an influence which can be seen in the sense of movement in her figures even today.

Her first interaction with tribal people was organizing art workshops with the Gond tribe in the Gadchiroli area of Maharashtra .She then worked with tribal/urban people in the Pachod area, near Ahmedabad and for SEARCH in Gadchiroli . Her interaction with tribal people gave her valuable insight into their way of life and they became the source of inspiration for her work.

Her first series , "Autumn's Harmony" was created entirely in black and white and was based on some of the Gond tribe living in the remote forest interior of Maharashtra.Having no contact with the outside world and very little knowledge of it,they had few material possessions. Anuradha was surprised to find that the very concept of art was alien to them She spent time with them gaining their trust, and they showed her many different aspects of their daily life , and ways in which they earn their livelihood. The way in which tribal people live very simply along with nature, embracing it, living from it without destroying it, fascinated her. The paintings in this series are remarkable for their apparent simplicity, and the feeling of peacefulness and harmony they convey.

In the series "Music of Life", she studied the movement and rhythm of tribal people from the Rabari, Mutwa and Meghwal tribes in the desert Kutch region of Gujrat. The scarcity of water meant that people were freed from any form of farming or cultivation, creating craftwork became their only source of livelihood . Anuradha became fascinated by the way their craftwork into which all their energy poured, became a unique expression of their harmonious relationship with their environment. These paintings which are primarily black and white, but in which colour is introduced in Anuradha's work for the first time , celebrate the unique tribal ornamentation and pattern of this region. It is not surprising that a painting from this series garnered her a National award in 2008.

She has since created several series of paintings based on tribal people, travelling to remote parts of Gujerat, Sikkim and Nepal . In the Festive Rhythm series, she combined her signature black and white with earthen colours, to create vibrant beautiful paintings inspired by the Bhagoria festivities of the Bhill and Bhilal tribe, where young men and women meet to choose their partners during the festival of Holi .The colours of the paintings echo the colours of the festival they portray, and the black graceful figures set against a bold colourful background ,absorbed in primordial rituals that have existed for centuries have a timeless quality .

A recent series Ethereal Accords focuses purely on the abstract designs and patterns of the tribal people

Last year was a successful year. A painting from the Festive Rhythm series were chosen to represent India in a calendar featuring artists from 12 different countries .A successful show at Jehangir art gallery in Mumbai last year attracted a lot of media attention and she is now selling internationally.

Rhythm of the Seasons is a celebration of her work and her life's journey into the tribal way of life, rooted in nature and the cycle of the seasons.
